The Detour

Driving down a familiar highway, you are comfortable. You know where you plan on going, have an idea of when you are going to get there and what you are going to do.

Out of the blue, your highway comes to an end and you are forced to take a detour. The road is narrow, there are no street lights and it has gotten very dark.  You are afraid, you’ve never been here before. You so desperately want to turn around and get back to your comfortable highway you know so well, but you are on a one way road. There is no going back.

The road starts to go uphill and it begins to blizzard outside. Your vehicle sputters as it struggles to make the climb. Your tires spin on the ice. Sometimes it gets traction and moves up the hill, sometimes it loses grip on the ice and slides back down.

Eventually, through the blizzard and icy road, you make it to the top only to find the other side is a steep drop. Your vehicle goes over, you have no brakes and you’ve lost control of the steering wheel. Your vehicle picks up momentum and you are panicking. You wonder when this is going to end, is this ever going to end, as you continue to fall, fall, fall.

The road begins to even out. Your vehicle slows down and you have control of your breaks and steering wheel once again.

The dark, one way road becomes bumpy. So bumpy, you hang on to the wheel for dear life. You get a flat tire so you pull your vehicle over to the side. You’ve never changed a tire, you don’t know what you’re doing but you decide to give it a try. As soon as you step out, the sky opens up and a cold rain comes pouring down on you.

This is where others have decided to leave there vehicles, they just don’t want to do it anymore. Some have been forced out, their vehicles being too broken and battered to repair.

You work hard in the darkness to change your tire as the rain pours down on you. You are tired, you are soaked and you are chilled to the bone. You have thoughts about leaving your vehicle behind too, but you don’t.

Your spare tire is successfully put on and you get back in your vehicle, out of the rain. You begin to limp forward. Your vehicle struggles at first, but slowly, very slowly it starts to speed up. The heavy rain has slowed down to a light shower.

Up ahead, you see a bridge. It is a small, wooden bridge that crosses a deep crevice. Some vehicles have fallen into this deep crevice, getting stuck even though there vehicles still work. You decide to cross over the bridge to get to the other side. You dare not look back into the darkness in fear of falling into the crevice with the others. You stay on course until you get off the bridge.

The sun shines down upon you. Butterflies are feeding on the wild flowers that line the sides of the road. You open your windows to let the warm air in. You hear birds chirping and the light breeze on the trees. You have never seen anything so beautiful in your life and you wonder why you have not taken this road before.

You look to your left. Across a patch of grass, you see the old comfortable road you were on and so desperately wanted to get back to. You see for the first time that it was that road which has always been in the darkness. You weren’t able to see that until you took the detour and crossed the bridge into the true light.

There is a bend in the road up ahead. You don’t know what is around the bend, it doesn’t matter. You know you are exactly where you are meant to be in that moment and you realize everything always works out for you.

As you continue your journey, you give thanks to your vehicle for being strong enough to handle all the challenges on the detour. You are so grateful you chose to stay in your vehicle, even when you thought it couldn’t move forward one more inch. You know you could not have survived without your vehicle, and your vehicle would not have survived without you, for on this journey you are one in the same.
